McGloin Elected to Penn State Board of Trustees

Penn State University alumni have elected Lackawanna County Commissioner
Matt McGloin to the university’s Board of Trustees. The results of the alumni election, which took place from April 10 to May 2, were announced Friday at the Penn State Board of Trustees meeting at University Park and approved by the board.

Nine alumni board members serve three-year terms on the 38-member board; three are elected each year. McGloin’s term will begin July 1 and end June 30, 2027. Members are limited to four terms.

McGloin, a West Scranton native who walked on to Penn State’s football team and became its starting quarterback, graduated in 2012 with a degree in communications. He went on to play professionally for seven years in the NFL and XFL. He and his wife Bailey, a fellow PSU grad, reside in Waverly with their sons Marshall and Beckett.

“I’m honored to have been elected to the Penn State University Board of Trustees, McGloin said. “I look forward to serving and giving back to a school that has given me so much. I want to help make sure we are continuing to make the commitment and ensuring that Penn State remains a world-class academic institution. The core of my service will be student success and wellbeing and guaranteeing that students receive the best education and resources on all of our campuses and are set for success after graduation.”

Five candidates sought the three alumni board seats. Two other former Penn State and NFL football players, Brandon Short and Carl Nassib, also won. Alumni cast 24,060 ballots, on which they could vote for three candidates. Short, an incumbent, received 17,083 votes, followed by McGloin with 15,064, and Nassib with 13,274. The other candidates, both incumbents, were Alvin DeLevie and Steven B. Wagman.

The board comprises Gov. Josh Shapiro and PSU President Neeli Benapudi, who are nonvoting ex-officio members; the state secretaries of education, agriculture and conservation and natural resources; six members appointed by the governor; six members appointed by several agricultural societies; six members representing business and industry; three at-large members elected by the board; a member representing the study body who is elected by the board; a faculty representative nominated by the Faculty Senate; and the immediate past president of the Penn State Alumni Association, who is an ex-officio nonvoting member.

Penn State has a major presence in Lackawanna County, including the Scranton campus and more than 8,100 alumni.
